Greenroom
Manchester |

greenroom
is one of Manchester's hidden gems that you NEED to know about. It
is a theatre space and a bar (and more things besides) slap bang in
Manchester city centre and close to all the transport links. greenroom
is just behind the Cornerhouse on Oxford Road and opposite the Ritz
on Whitworth Street. Like these two other Manchester institutions
the greenroom celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2008 and is a charity
which has been developing Manchester performers for the last 25 years,
household names like Caroline Aherne, Peter Kaye, Steve Coogan cut
their teeth there. Annually greenroom has three exciting seasons showcasing
International as well as local talent. Greenroom offers anything but
the average night out with a wide range of shows on every week be
quick though as they appear for 'one night only'. |

The
Bar itself is spacious and comfortable with Italian designer furniture
from Ferrious down the road. It is open Wednesday to Saturday (closed
Sun, Mon and Tues) and offers free wifi. There is a wide selection
of fair-trade and organic products and most evenings there is something
new or eclectic in the bar, whether that’s visual or music or
both. The bar events are mostly free and on an evening you can experience
Japanese pop culture (Nanimew) or the best new and unsigned bands
(Green Bohemia) as well as open mic poetry (Freed Up) and cabaret
(Vaudeville). You are also free to bring in your own food in to this
informal space if you wish (no Macdonalds or KFC!) |
|
The
greenroom Bar boasts a large selection of beers including five fruit
beers, bottled real ales (including Ginger Marble, Fraoch, Kelpie
and Landlord), German and Czech draught lagers, Belgian beers, wheat
beers, extensive spirit selection and wine list as well as an impressive
and exotic soft drink selection. All the tea and coffee is fair trade,
and there is soya milk, fair trade wine and there is organic cider,
fruit juice and beer. |

Even
if you are popping in for a cheeky half you never know what you may
find yourself involved in. Every night is different, whether you stumble
upon the 36 hour free festival Emergency, 40 performances in 36 hours
or a band marathon during In The City which saw 30 bands play the
venue in 2 days! There are always free installations and exhibitions
and something to look at whether that’s the free magazines and
newspapers for those just having a quiet pint. |
