Lord Nelson Pub Manchester
"Kiss Me, Hardy"
The Northern Quarter has witnessed the death of The Lord Nelson after it was demolished earlier this month. The notoriously rough pub on the corner of Ancoats was once owned by ex-Quality Street gangster and boxing promoter Jimmy "The Weed" Donnelly, immortalised in the Thin Lizzy song 'Johnny The Fox meets Jimmy The Weed' and also famed for being the uncle of Gio-Goi founders Anthony and Christopher Donnelly. Talking of which, a biographical film about the brothers and their own naughty background is currently in production.

Peel Fail Again With Jackson's Wharf Plans
Peel Holdings have had their plans rejected yet again by the council for an ugly Ian Simpson-designed apartment block to replace the derelict Jackson's Wharf pub in Castlefield. Pride Of Manchester had joined the successful campaign by local residents, including Jason Orange, Mike Harding and James Hickman, to force Peel to come up with more fitting designs for the urban heritage zone.

The hidden away canalside gem that was Jacksons 1836 in the Piccadilly Basin area of the Northern Quarter, re-opens this weekend as gay-friendly Jacksons Retro Bar, with a nod to the 60's and 70's. ~ 30th June


Aqua Bar near Deansgate Locks has reopened as Barcode Bar & Clubroom, a student-orientated weekend nightclub, open until 4am on Fridays and Saturdays. ~ 24th June


The White Lion in Withington has made way for a Sainsbury's store, keeping the building's exterior. ~ 21st June


We're excited about the future opening of the new wine bar, restaurant and deli at The Hive building on Lever Street in the Northern Quarter and will bring you an exclusive update in the next few days. ~ 17th June


Mary and Archies bar has opened in the premises vacated by Silver Apples in West Didsbury. ~ 17th June


Verso cocktail bar in West Didsbury has shut after two and a half years of trading. East Didsbury favourite, Saints & Scholars restaurant are set to open in its place. ~ 17th June


Trof have had had plans for a 2000 capacity late night live music venue in the basement of Quay House on Quay Street rejected by the council. ~ 2nd June
